"How We Strive To Do Good: AppNexus Impact Week"

Global Impact Week began after we joined with Pledge 1%, but the urge to do good has always been a part of AppNexus. One of our core values is to see and improve the whole system, and to us, "system" doesn't only mean "the internet." It means the entire world.

The week of October 20th was a particularly special one at AppNexus, but not because of anything to do with ad tech. Instead, it was AppNexus Global Impact Week, which is when AppNexians around the world carry out charitable events in their local communities.

This year's Impact Week was a huge success. More than half our global workforce – about 540 AppNexians in all – volunteered their time for causes they're passionate about. This led to a total of 1,800 total hours given to charity across 16 different offices to support more than 30 non-profit organizations.

Below, we'd like to tell you more about the approach that led to this success and share some highlights from the week.

Our approach to making an impact

Global Impact Week began after we joined with Pledge 1%, but the urge to do good has always been a part of AppNexus. One of our core values is to see and improve the whole system, and to us, "system" doesn't only mean "the internet." It means the entire world.

That's why, for example, well before we joined Pledge 1%, we had an official "Do Good" club that organized informal charity efforts in our New York office. But as we grew into a global company, we wanted a way to spread the "do good" instinct to our offices around the world. At the same time, we also wanted these efforts to be for local causes that AppNexians of all stripes are passionate about, rather than organize top down efforts for causes dictated by people in our New York headquarters.

That's what led us to join the Pledge 1% movement and create the AppNexus Impact steering committee. The steering committee works with global ambassadors in each office to organize local volunteer events or fundraisers – usually about one per quarter for each office. The committee has also built a platform for any AppNexian to organize events for causes they're passionate about and that impact the communities they live and work in.

Some highlights from Impact Week

Nearly all of our Impact Week efforts were self-directed, local efforts organized by the global ambassadors in each of the 16 offices that participated. So, in addition to the outstanding stats we cited at the beginning of the article, highlights of the week included:

And those are just examples from six offices of the 16 who participated – with many of those 16 holding multiple initiatives. From building butterfly habitats to preparing meals for folks who are less fortunate, the common theme that unites all of these projects is that the participants chose them themselves because they were passionate about them. We can't wait to see where AppNexians choose to make a difference next year!

5 Reasons Why Working At AppNexus Was The Best Decision I Ever Made

Below is an article originally written by Erika at PowerToFly Partner AppNexus, a Xandr Company, and published on February 28, 2017. Go to AppNexus' page on PowerToFly to see their open positions and learn more.

Steve Jobs once said, "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do."

AppNexus and the industry we are in is so fast-paced that everyone is constantly learning and innovating; there is not a single day I'm at work where I don't learn something new. I'm given the opportunity to thrive and accomplish my goals alongside some of the industry's smartest people. Since starting at AppNexus Sydney, a remote office, I've learned that working outside of our New York City headquarters has its perks. As someone who is relatively new to AppNexus, it works in my favor the office is small enough that if I shout out a question, I'm bound to get at least three people's attention.

I work in an environment where my opinion is valued and my voice is heard. I have a great support network both at an international level at our headquarters and within the APAC region with our Singapore office. As a remote office, we do miss out on the bigger events but we always make up for it and do it with Sydney style – whether that's turning a Women's Network conference to a wine and cheese event or getting lunch catered so we can re-watch a Razzle Dazzle as a team.

If I had to put my finger down on one thing that I enjoy most about working at AppNexus, it's the people. Here are five reasons why the people at AppNexus make working here the best decision I've ever made.

1. People embrace the Learn & Teach value.
There is no denying that I love a challenge, and learning a lot of information in a short period is a challenge that comes with the territory of a new job. The learning curve I experienced at AppNexus surpassed my expectations, and the growth I experienced was only possible due to AppNexians who embody our Learn and Teach value. During the first few months at AppNexus, everyone I encountered was willing to answer any question I had. Everyone is willing to share what they know and help you grow in your role and your career. During the mere 3.5 months that I have been with AppNexus, I have been able to expand upon the knowledge learned in from my Master's degree in ways I never thought possible.

2. At AppNexus, Friends = Family.
Growing up as an only child, I have always valued my friendships very deeply. My friends are one of the most important aspects of my life, and I would do anything for them. I never expected to find those kinds of lasting friendships at work, but my colleagues have become my friends, and more importantly, they have now become my family. They are my biggest supporters, rooting for me to succeed in every aspect of life – whether that be thriving in a client meeting or waking up early for our Friday morning workout sessions.

3. You become who you surround yourself with.
I spend an average of 40 hours a week with my team I work with at AppNexus - and this number doesn't take into account the Friday after work drinks or the Sunday afternoon barbeques. Based on that, one would deduce that I spend most of my time with them. There's a saying that you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If this is true, I'm a lucky person because the people I work with are the smartest, funniest and hardest-working people I know. Working in a global office with fewer people, I have the opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of teams and individuals at various stages in their careers. It's not often that an Associate can say they have exposure to the Senior Consultants all the way up to the Managing Director of the region. How lucky am I that I literally get to sit next to them and pick their brains every day? They are all so driven and passionate about everything from work to their personal lives, even to beating their own personal best's on video games!

4. It's not just about us.
Giving back to my community has always been important to me. As a teenager, I used to spend my summers volunteering at organizations that catered towards under-privileged children and their families. I was so excited to discover that AppNexus also finds value in giving back with AppNexus Impact. AppNexus Impact is an initiative that encourages businesses to pledge 1% of their time, equity and/or product to the greater community. During my third week, the Sydney team volunteered at a local animal shelter, where we assisted with various tasks such as cleaning the rabbit homes. I know I can speak on behalf of my team when I say that we all had an amazing time. My friends outside of work saw my Snapchats and asked how they could get involved, because it looked like we were having so much fun! Going to work that day was incredibly rewarding to say the least.

5. It's FUN!
As Neil Young said, "It's cool to go places where working people are happy."

There is not a week that goes by where one of my friends doesn't make a comment along the lines of "your office looks like so much fun" or "did you really ride a tricycle through the office"? They live vicariously through my Snapchats and Instagram posts where they see pictures of the team at Family Lunch, watching the NHL, or playing Nintendo 64, and more. I am excited EVERY SINGLE DAY to go into work. Sunday nights/Monday mornings don't look so bleak anymore, and Friday rolls around before I know it.

I am so lucky to have the luxury of working for a large company in a smaller office where I can see the differences I make and how it contributes to the overall business and strategy. It has also given me the opportunity to travel both internationally and domestically, and work with some of our biggest clients. Whilst the past few months have been a steep learning curve, I have no doubt that choosing AppNexus, and having AppNexus choose me, was the best career move I could have possibly made.

Building to a Global AppNexus Community Through Inclusiveness

Below is an article originally written by PowerToFly Partner AppNexus, and published on July 25, 2018. Go to AppNexus' page on PowerToFly to see their open positions and learn more.

In 2018, AppNexus is building to a global community in which each AppNexian feels safe being their authentic self in all aspects of work, through inclusiveness. An environment in which this is possible necessitates the development of best-in-class practices, through inward reflection on AppNexus' progress and misses thus far, and outward observation of international employment trends and metrics.

Led by Antoinette Hamilton, our Vice President of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Experience, we have created a program of diversity and inclusion objectives for 2018 that we will report the results of in Q2 of 2019.

They fall into three key areas:

(1) Diversify the Pipeline

  • 50/50 gender equity in new hires at manager and above level
  • 29% of tech roles filled by women
  • 25% of new hires in the United States are People of Color
  • 50% women and non-binary or underrepresented group diversity in our Summer internship class

Diversity of thought triggers innovation. While tech companies have historically sought "Culture Fits," AppNexus is looking for "Culture Adds" – new hires who bring heterogenous skills and perspectives to our teams. Diversifying our pipeline thus encompasses tracks to proactively source and attract diverse candidates through external partnerships and events, and fortify our hiring journey with bias interrupters, which ensure that in every step of the process, stakeholders are aware of unconscious obstacles to diverse hiring.

(2) Conscious Inclusion

  • 75% employee participation in diversity and inclusion trainings like Ally Skills Training and Inclusive Leadership
  • Increase engagement with underrepresented communities by leveraging the AppNexus affinity groups to galvanize external community initiatives
  • Launch a global "back to work" framework for AppNexus parents, looking at the most appropriate and supportive structure for employees returning from parental leave

Conscious inclusion is the step following the acknowledgement of unconscious bias: Now that I am aware, how am I going to act? AppNexus will continue to provide and require diversity and inclusion trainings internationally, as well as expanding analyses of our workplace practices and policies, to ensure every aspect of our daily community experience bolsters our employees and affinity groups.

(3) Global Belonging

  • Stand up a new global (versus US-centric) Diversity & Inclusion Council to oversee our initiatives
  • Build diversity and inclusion geo-specific actions plans to drive inclusiveness across our international markets
  • Create tools to enable business- and purpose-driven affinity groups

AppNexus offices span the globe, and we strive to create diversity and inclusion plans that fit each region. With an eye to global employee feedback, we are building geo-specific action plans for our global teams that leverage and expand our affinity groups, redefine what it means to be an AppNexus Culture Champion, and engage our international offices across events like OutNexus Pride Week and our Women's Leadership Forum.

Bridging these three categories is the goal to develop external partnerships with organizations that support inclusion in tech, people with disabilities, and veterans (in our US market.)

We are excited to methodically set about these goals, building on our momentum and our employees' unwaveringly impressive and expressive engagement. At the heart of all our efforts lies the belief that hiring the best and hiring diverse teams are one and the same. We are stronger together when we are different, and so is AppNexus.
