Why a Career at Thales Means You'll Never Stop Growing
Resourcing Manager Vicki Emerson's Take On Career Development Opportunities - From Travel to Cutting-Edge Technology
Ever wondered how your data is protected when you check your account balance on your phone? Or enjoyed an in-flight movie? You may not have heard of Thales, but chances are you know their technology.
Thales creates advanced technology systems that impact everything from everyday experiences like checking your account balance, to the extraordinary advances in the aerospace, space, transportation, defense, and security industries.
If you're interested in helping to power the technology that governments, militaries, and individuals rely on each day to do their jobs, then consider a career at Thales, where you'll be able to grow and innovate at the same rate as the cutting-edge projects you're working on. Oh, and did we mention that for a serious tech company, they also offer some serious benefits (from 4 weeks minimum PTO to travel)? The technology they develop is no joke, but they know employees' well-being needs to be taken just as seriously.
To learn more about the culture of empathy and teamwork at Thales, we chatted with Vicki Emerson, Resourcing Manager for Thales InFlyt Experience (shoutout again to those in-flight movies!). She also leads the recruiting team, and recently got the opportunity to relocate from Melbourne, Australia to Irvine California with her family, all thanks to the international mobility offered by Thales!
After 11 years at Thales, we asked her to sum up her experience in just one word. "One word for Thales? That's hard, but I'll go with Global!" Distilling a company that works with so many industries across the world is no easy task, but Thales is truly global in all senses - from the composition of their team to the impact of their products. In the company's own words:
...World-class technology, the combined expertise of 65,000 employees, and operations in 56 countries have made Thales a key player in keeping the public safe and secure, guarding vital infrastructure and protecting the national security interests of countries around the globe.
Another great benefit of working for a truly global company is having the flexibility to move and keep your job. Pursuing a lifelong career with Thales doesn't mean having to stay in one place. That's how Vicki, originally from Melbourne, Australia, was able to relocate with her family in 2017 to sunny Irvine, CA.
I'm originally from Australia and I applied for an international assignment in the USA. Thales offers and encourages international mobility to its employees and you can travel and experience the world whilst you continue to pursue your career with Thales. I was placed in Irvine, California and we've been California dreaming ever since. We went on a 4 week RV trip over summer which covered all of California and we had the best time!
If the chance to travel and work on cutting edge technology has you eager to apply, but you're not sure how to make yourself stand out, Vicki has some easy advice - learn how to pronounce Thales! "Thales is pronounced as Alice with a T. Talice."
Secondly, and more seriously, she also recommends that anyone interested in applying, "Research Thales to understand where you fit into our organization. We cover various industries and deliver many products large and small! We are always seeking passionate, curious and innovative people to join our organization."
Even though the work is high tech, Thales offers a very human environment. "People are at the heart of what we do at Thales, which is why you'll find passionate, supportive, team-oriented and like-minded people." That's a big part of why Thales partners with PowerToFly:
We recognize that our people are all unique in their life experiences, skills and abilities. We want to be known for having a diverse workforce and valuing the range of backgrounds that represent our people through gender, age, LGBTI, ethnicity, religious and cultural backgrounds. We see PowerToFly as a way to connect and engage with Women in Tech and beyond.
As a mother herself, Vicki knows that "it's easy to lose who you are when you're managing a career, figuring out parenthood, managing a household, and striving to be a good mum/partner/friend/daughter/sister, etc." Her advice?
Prioritize things that make YOU happy and find an employer that supports you… I have been well supported at Thales - my managers have been accommodating throughout the eleven years, having achieved many personal milestones. If you are struggling to juggle all your commitments, I encourage you to speak up and raise [your concerns] with your manager.
Interested in working in a supportive, understanding environment that will help you stay at the top of your game in the office and at home? Thales is hiring. Check out a full list of Thales Careers here.

We all have our favorite websites– the ones we frequent, bookmark, and recommend to others. You might even enjoy some website features so much that you’ve found yourself wondering why they aren’t more popular. Or maybe you’ve experienced times where you were frustrated with a website and wished you could add features or even design your own!
If you’ve ever found yourself intrigued at the prospect of designing and developing your own websites, then a career as a web developer might be just for you!
As a web developer you would be responsible for coding, designing, optimizing, and maintaining websites. Today, there are over 1.7 billion websites in the world and, in turn, the demand for web developers is on the rise. In order to figure out what kind of web development work best suits you let’s start with an introduction to the three main roles in web development that you can choose from.
The Three Types of Web Development Jobs
Front-End Web Development: The Creative Side
In addition to programming skills, front-end developers need to be detail oriented, creative, willing to keep up with the latest trends in web development, cyber security conscious, and geared toward user-friendly designs. The median salary for a front-end developer can reach well into the $90,000 to $100,000 range.
Back-End Web Development: The Logical Counterpart
While a house can be beautifully decorated, it’s incomplete without a solid foundation and efficient infrastructure. Similarly, a well-designed website depends on logical and functional code to power the features of that website. Back-end web development is code-heavy and focused on the specifics of how a website works. If you enjoy the analytical challenge of creating the behind-the-scenes code that powers a website, then back-end development is for you.
Full-Stack Web Development: A Little Bit of Everything
A full-stack developer is essentially the Jack (or Jill)-of-all-trades in web development. Full-stack developers need to be knowledgeable about both front-end and back-end roles. This does not necessarily imply that you would need to be an expert in both roles, but you should fully understand the different applications and synergies they each imply. In order to work in this position, you will need to know the programming languages used by front-end and back-end developers. In addition to these languages, full-stack developers also specialize in databases, storage, HTTP, REST, and web architecture.
Full-stack developers are often required to act as liaisons between front-end and back-end developers. Full-stack developers need to be both problem solvers and great communicators. The end goal for a full-stack developer is to ensure that the user’s experience is seamless, both on the front-end and on the back-end. In return, you can expect to earn a median salary of $100,000 – $115,000 a year for this role.
Taking the Next Step
Web development is both in-demand and lucrative! All three roles described above contribute to specific aspects of web development and the scope of each one can be customized to the industries and positions you feel best suit you. Regardless of which role you choose, all of them need a foundation in programming.
To gain the programming skills needed in each role, you can enroll in courses or learn independently. Coding bootcamps are a great way to boost your skillset quickly and efficiently.

💎 Partnerships in remote environments is one of the most important aspects to construct in a company. Watch the video to the end to get good tips on how to do it successfully.
📼Wondering how to create partnerships in remote environments? Play this video to get three top tips that will help you to achieve it. You'll hear from Olga Shvets, HR Business Partner, and Viktoriia Litvinchuk, People Team Operations at Unstoppable Domains, who will explain the essentials of this process.
📼How to build partnerships in remote environments? Tip #1: Communicate Effectively. Communication is the key to enabling your remote team to be successful. Choose the channel that works best. For this, chat with your employees and see what they use to communicate, that's how you find the best solution. Also, make sure your team is on board with your internal tools and they know what, how, and where they need to use them.
📼A requisite for building partnerships in remote environments is Tip #2: Show appreciation. Appreciation is shown through your actions. Let your employees know that you value everything they do for the company. Create a special gratitude channel where everyone can share their appreciation for their colleagues for some contribution. Celebrate some wins, promotions, and everything that is important for the company. If you appreciate the employees, employees do the same for the company.
Create Partnerships In Remote Environments Using Trust - Tip #3: Give Honest Feedback
Use engagement surveys! They are a quick and effective way to receive honest feedback from your team and you can see what's working well and what needs to be improved. Your main priority is to create spaces where managers and employees can share honest, relevant feedback.
