We Learned A Lot From Checkr's Women Tech Leaders

PowerToFly was back in our "home away from home" of San Francisco (as a remote company, everywhere is kind of home) to present our fourth (!!!) event with a truly extraordinary company: Checkr.

If you're not familiar with Checkr, they're the leading background check company using artificial intelligence and machine learning to make hiring more inclusive and efficient. They work with an impressive roster of clients and are continuing to grow. If you're curious, you should check out their website and careers page.

Our September 5th event was hosted by PowerToFly's Jamie Lipiner. Here's what one attendee had to say about the event: "I didn't know about Checkr before this event. I love the panel of speakers. They came across as genuine and thoughtful people—the kind I would enjoy knowing."

The evening included an insightful tech talk by Checkr's Michelle Berry, Software Engineer entitled Zero message loss: Kafka tooling at Checkr. After her tech talk, Michelle joined a panel of Checkr's women tech leaders for a lively discussion and audience Q&A session. Our panelists included:

  • Adrienne Pajer, Engineering Manager
  • Holly Bowen, Engineer
  • Cheryl Mak, Data Analyst
  • Elena Horner, Product Manager
Checkr is hiring! Visit their page on PowerToFly to learn more about their open roles.

How These Companies Are Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

According to a recent study, anti-Asian hate crimes have risen 150% since the pandemic started. But these acts of violence are not new — they are part of a much larger history of anti-Asian racism and violence in the U.S.

That makes celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (which was named a month-long celebration in May by Congress in 1992 "to coincide with two important milestones in Asian/Pacific American history: the arrival in the United States of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843 and contributions of Chinese workers to the building of the transcontinental railroad, completed May 10, 1869") this year all the more important.

How to Scale: 3 Tips from VTS’s Jess Scott on How to Go from 200 to 1,000 Employees

Remember when, in movies from the late 1990s, characters who were looking for a job would leaf through a newspaper's classified section to see who was hiring?

Jess Scott has been running HR teams and talent acquisition teams since then. "You would circle in red pen the job they're going to go apply for. That's how you applied!" she says, laughing. "Sending emails, especially with attachments, was still a very new thing."

Diversity and Inclusion Calendar 2021

Inclusive leaders are ones who make their team feel like they belong, like they're valued, and like their whole self is seen and appreciated at work. Being cognizant of different holidays and celebrations can go a long way in doing that.

Perhaps your company chooses to highlight the diversity of your employees by collectively celebrating different festive days. Or maybe you're encouraging employees to use floating paid holidays to mark important days with their families and friends. Either way, a diversity awareness calendar for 2021 can go a long way in helping you meet your goals. Avoid insensitive missteps by checking against these 2021 diversity holidays before scheduling all-hands meetings or company parties.
